Kijiji Ukulima Eco (KUE) collaborates with Farmers Alliance for Restoration (FAR) in a two-year regenerative agriculture project in Lundha, Kenya
KUE is excited to be an implementing partner in FAR’s transformative two-year permaculture project in Lundha, Kenya. This initiative aims to strengthen sustainable agricultural practices, improve market access, and empower both women and youth in Lundha, a rural community in Siaya County.
⏱️The project kicked off with an inception meeting held on July 4th, where lead farmers from the community were officially introduced to the project. This meeting served as a platform to align expectations between the project team and the participating farmers. It was also a space for honest dialogue on the challenges and opportunities ahead.
🔍One of the key topics discussed was the limited participation of youth in agriculture. Many young people perceive farming as physically demanding, low-paying, and lacking prestige. Together, the team and lead farmers explored how intergenerational learning and mindset change could help shift this narrative by positioning agriculture as an innovative, rewarding, and future-oriented profession.
🟰Another powerful insight came from the role of women mobilisers, who are instrumental in increasing the attendance and active involvement of women in agricultural training sessions and community events. Their influence is critical to building inclusive and equitable farming systems.
🌾Additionally, the group emphasised the importance of market access and bargaining power. Farmers must be able to consistently meet supply and demand if they are to fully benefit from improved agricultural practices. They agreed that this calls for:
- Consistency in production
- Stronger collective bargaining
- Market intelligence and value addition
As we embark on this journey, we are optimistic that the project will bring lasting benefits to the Lundha community through knowledge sharing, strengthened networks, and more resilient livelihoods.
Stay tuned as we share more stories, lessons, and milestones from the field!
